This elegant pagoda, which is both popular and highly venerated, marked the south-east entrance to the city in the 16C. It is said to have been founded on the remains of a Khmer sanctuary, of which the small laterite construction behind it was perhaps once part. Unusually, the sanctuary is divided into two rooms. In the one to the rear, above the altar, note the gold-covered lak muang - this stone pillar is said to have been one of the founding pillars of the city and subsequently gave its name to the pagoda.
