The Guri Amir, or Tomb of the Emperor, was originally intended to house the remains of Tamerlane's grandson, who died prematurely, and whom the conqueror considered his successor. Construction was barely completed when Tamerlane himself died (in 1405) and was buried alongside his descendants. The building stands out with its fluted cupola, which is 15m in diameter and 12.5m tall. The two slender minarets flanking the entrance add to the mausoleum's overall grace.
