Onta-yaki's villagers have been upholding pottery traditions for the last 300 years. Entirely hand-made, the clay is extracted from the earth, then crushed by wooden water-powered hammers, filtered, left to rest, modelled into pottery, dried, fired in a wooden kiln and then sold. The village's pottery is mainly comprised of everyday tableware decorated with simple geometric patterns. The work and tools of generations of potters are exhibited in a small museum.
