Bishkek's second major hub of activity lies to the west of Ala-Too Square. It is dominated by the imposing and very Soviet façade of the Philharmonia, in front of which stands an equestrian statue of Manas, the national poet and hero, perched on top of a column and depicted in the throes of battle with a dragon. The cool air created by the pools and fountains makes the square popular with Bishkek's student population. The square also leads to the State University along a long pedestrian avenue called the "Alley of Youth".
