The heart of the city beats beneath the vaulted ceiling of the majestic St Stephen's Cathedral, whose eight centuries of existence are interwoven with the capital's glory days and dark times. Its slender towers loom over the oldest parts of the city, where, despite remodelling, a few houses, palaces and little streets reminiscent of imperial Vienna have survived.
