Rebuilt on several occasions since 1846, the oldest palace in Shanghai once again bears its original name. Astor House is open to the public, who can admire its long corridors with their worn parquet floors, its atrium decorated with photos of celebrities who have stayed here (Charlie Chaplin, Albert Einstein etc), and the ballroom where the Shanghai Stock Exchange was launched in 1990. Supplanted by the Hôtel de la Paix in the late 1920s, the hotel has retained much of its charm.
