The first settlers to arrive, known as the Denny Party, spent winter 1851 on Alki Beach, before moving into the Pioneer Square location. Today, the beach, which in summer attracts swimmers and beach-volleyball players, parallels a boardwalk frequented by rollerbladers and joggers in almost any weather. The city centre and Puget Sound command very fine views here.
