This 16C-18C palace was once the seat of the dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp who acceded to the Russian throne in 1762. It now houses several excellent museums: the Regional Museum of Art and Cultural History, the Regional Museum of Archaeology (containing the Nydam Boat) and various ethnological collections including a major display of Japanese arms and armour.
