This huge gate, set in Aurelian's Wall (3C), leads into Piazza del Popolo and heralds the city's splendour to visitors arriving from the north along the former Via Flaminia. Its exterior façade bears the Medici coat of arms in accordance with Pope Pius IV's wishes; on the square's side, it was richly decorated in the 17C by Bernini.
