The fortress dates from the early 19th century and served as the residence of the Bahraini sovereigns and the seat of government until 1860. The fortress has been completely restored and offers a picturesque walk through a maze of courtyards and staircases to discover the countless rooms, some beautifully decorated to serve as residences, others austere, once housing sheds or defence posts. The terrace offers a lovely view of the island's interior. A small café is available to extend your break.
