Michel Macary's architecture is in harmony with that of IM Pei, who designed the inverted pyramid, an enormous crystalline shape that provides a well of light in the arcade. The concrete masonry, rows of windows and subdued lighting combine to give the main arcade the appearance of a nave. On the site of Charles V's moats, the pillars and floors in Burgundy stone exude a certain polished coldness.
