The sturdy tower of Öja church was built by the mysterious "Egypticus", a talented stone sculptor or workshop comprising several artisans - experts are still unsure which... The Öja crucifix was originally surrounded by a crowd of sculpted figures. The Virgin on the left is a replica of the Öja Madonna, which is displayed nowadays in the Gotland Historical Museum in Visby.
