This arena dates back to the 1C BC and was thought to have been able to seat 14,000 spectators. It was used to stage chariot races and, after converting the track into a pool, even naval battles (naumachiae). The pit in the centre probably contained the machinery necessary to convert the track and storage for spare parts.
