In the 19C, the Parque Universitario was the site of the Universidad de San Marcos, the oldest university on the American continent. It is now home to the Centro Cultural de la Universidad and Museo de Arqueología y Antropología, which also encompasses the Galería de Arte. The Panteón de los Próceres, housed in a small Baroque chapel, conserves the remains of the heroes of the War of Independence.
