In the mid 20C, excavations were carried out which revealed 45 tombs dating from the Dian kingdom (4C-2C BC). Kunming City Museum has rebuilt some of these and also houses exhibits such as bronze drums, cowrie shells, engraved sword blades, sapek coins, decorated buttons and belt buckles, and a copy of a gold seal which symbolised the alliance between Emperor Han Wudi and the king of Dian. Also worthy of note is a carved and dated pillar from the Dali kingdom (10C-13C).
