Undoubtedly Jerash's most striking monument, the theatre was built in the early 2C. Its cavea is divided into two blocks of tiered seating, 29 rows deep. The seats were numbered, using Greek lettering, which you can still make out on the front rows situated at the far ends of the stage. From the promenade gallery there is a view of the town wall curving round the semi-circle of the theatre and beyond over Jerash's hilly countryside. Every July the theatre is the backdrop for the local folklore festival.
