This plateau was fortified and remodelled as a true Citadel incorporating the Marchionale palace, some rooms of which have retained their fired and painted limestone paving tiles. The small fort accommodated a few churches including the Annunziata (its pavement has 26 funerary pits). The Scuderia Grotto, used a stables from the Middle Ages onwards, is decorated with equestrian themed graffiti . But the most staggering attraction is the Centoscale, a stairway that goes 60m underground.
