It is called the "Valley of the Artists" (Kunstnerdalen) on account of the large number of famous painters - such as Munch, Thaulow, Krohg, Kittelsen, Skredsvig, Tidemand and Gude - who stayed here in the late 19C and early 20C and were inspired by its serene landscapes.
