At Daun, the Maare region begins: smallish lakes lying in the the volcanic zone of the Upper Eifel, which underwent much upheaval in the Tertiary era. Gemundener Maare is a small dark green lake popular with bathers and rowers in summertime. Weinfelder Maar and Schalkenmehrener Maar both lie in craters on either side of the road. The perfectly circular Pulvermaar is the most beautiful lake in the region.
