One of the most important monastic centres in the country awaits you at the foot of the imposing Mt Ostrog. Some of the greatest historical figures have left their mark on the site: Danilo I, founder of the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty, died here in 1735. In the following century, Petar II also stayed here and wrote part of his famous book, The Mountain Wreath. The monastery has two churches under the aegis of the Virgin of the Assumption. In the smaller one 17C frescoes are to be seen.
