Saint-Alban district owes its name to the oldest monastery in Basel (1083) of which only one wing of the Romanesque cloister remains, now part of a residential house. Traces of it can still be seen from the old cemetery of St Alban's church (Gothic chancel and tower, 19C nave). It was in this abode that artist Arnold Böcklin spent his childhood. Wandering around this peaceful, picturesque, just two minutes from the busy historic centre, is very pleasant.
