The south side of this huge square, where every day the lively Waterloomarkt is held (a market for second-hand clothes and furniture, ethnic jewellery, fabrics etc), is flanked by the imposing form of a controversial double building. Stopera (1987) was designed by Austrian architect Wilhelm Holzbauer and Dutchman Cees Dam to house the Muziektheater (opera hall) and the Stadhuis (town hall).
