The small town of Tafraoute is set in a strange and imposing mountain cirque. A sparse palm grove forms the backdrop, where date palms stand alongside small fields of barley, argan, almond and carob trees. Above all this greenery, apart from a few villages, there are nothing but pink granite mountains: their sugar loaves or erosion-honed edges partly disappear under huge, bizarrely shaped scree.
